Preparing for surgery is both a physical and emotional process. The doctors and staff on your medical team are here to help you adequately prepare for the process of surgery and recovery.
Surgery Preparation Guidelines
Your surgeon will go over specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery with you depending on your exact diagnosis. Some general rules to follow are below.
Preparation for Surgery
- You will need to obtain primary care physician clearance prior to surgery or undergo pre-admission testing at the hospital a couple of days before surgery date.
- You may have the following tests completed: blood draw, chest X ray, EKG, and others if necessary.
- Do not eat or drink anything starting midnight the night before surgery.
- Please take your medication on the day of surgery with a sip of water, unless specified otherwise by your primary doctor or your surgeon.
- Rinse mouth with warm salt water or Peridex (Chlorhexidine) three times a day 48hrs before surgery day in addition to routine oral care with tooth brushing twice a day. This reduces the overall normal bacterial count in the oral cavity.
Day of Surgery Expectations
- You will be greeted in the pre-operative area by your surgeon, anesthesiologist, and nursing staff on the day of surgery.
- Your medical clearance, history, medications, and allergies will be reviewed. If deemed necessary additional tests will be ordered.
- Informed consent for the surgical procedure and anesthesia will be reviewed with the respective doctors and all paperwork signed.
- You will be marked with a marking pen on the side (right or left) of the planned procedure in the pre-operative area.
- The length of your surgery will vary depending on the exact procedure(s) you are having completed.
- You will be taken to Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) to complete your recovery.
- Family members will be alerted when you are awake enough to be seen, which may take 1-2 hours.
