Scars are a natural part of the body’s healing mechanism as it works to repair damaged tissue. However, not all scars heal the same way; some can become problematic, affecting mobility and appearance.
What Are Surgical Scars?
When the skin is cut during surgery, the body responds by forming scar tissue to close the wound. This process involves collagen production, which helps the tissue rebuild. However, scar tissue differs from normal skin in both texture and appearance because it lacks the regular alignment of collagen fibers found in healthy skin. As a result, surgical scars often look different from the surrounding tissue, appearing raised, sunken, or discolored. Several factors can affect how a scar heals, including the location of the incision, the type of surgery performed, the patient’s genetics, and how well the wound is cared for post-surgery.
