Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that disrupts breathing during sleep, leading to a range of health complications and a diminished quality of life if left untreated.
Types of Sleep Apnea
- Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common form and occurs when the throat muscles relax too much, causing the airway to become blocked during sleep.
- Central sleep apnea occurs when the brain fails to send the proper signals to the muscles that control breathing.
- Complex sleep apnea syndrome, which occurs when someone has both obstructive and central sleep apnea, is also known as treatment-emergent central sleep apnea.
