Osteoradionecrosis is a serious complication that can arise in patients undergoing radiation treatment for head and neck cancers. It involves the death of bone tissue due to radiation exposure.
What Is Osteoradionecrosis?
Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) occurs when bone tissue dies due to reduced blood supply after radiation therapy. Radiation therapy, often used to treat cancers of the head and neck, can damage both healthy and cancerous tissues. In some cases, the radiation affects the blood vessels that supply the bone, particularly in the jaw, leading to tissue death and necrosis. This condition most commonly affects the mandible (lower jaw) but can also occur in other bones.
